Community Service

The Blood Bank of Delmarva is a non-profit community-based blood center that provides lifesaving blood and blood products to 1.5 million people and 19 hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula. BBD volunteer opportunities serve to educate and encourage the public to donate at schools, businesses, and community organizations. High school and college volunteers can receive community service hours by hosting and volunteering at blood drives. Training is provided for all volunteer opportunities. Volunteering dates and times vary.

The Boys’ & Girls’ Club of DE is a childcare provider whose mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Our volunteers are role models in the community, they lead by example and ensure a safe and positive environment for our youth to learn and grow. Club volunteer hours are as followed: (M-F, 3:00-6:00pm) Specialized programming, training provided (M-F, 3:00-6:00pm) Internships Sports (Dependent on location).

The Community Education Building (CEB) has partnered with the Kumba Academy and Great Oaks Charter School to Preparing students for a successful post-secondary life involves connecting supports, families, students, school, and community. Volunteers would be working with either middle school or high school students as mentors to aid in getting them prepared for the next phase of their academic career (high school and college). Mentors would volunteer Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Faithful Friends Animal Society is an animal shelter that houses homeless pets with a strict No Kill philosophy to end killing for all animals who can’t be treated for their suffering. They are a shelter, but also advocate for animal welfare and a resource for pet owners. Volunteers would interact with majority cats and dogs to aid in taking care of the animals and/or the office. There are also event opportunities in which volunteers can take part in.

The FoodBank of DE is an organization that addresses food insecurity within the state of DE by providing services of food distribution and avenues to aid. Volunteer opportunities include on-campus Mobile Pantries, in which you will help distribute food items to individuals in the community, and on-site volunteering at their distribution site in Newark, DE.  Mobile Pantries occur once a month on campus from 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM. Newark site volunteering hours vary.

The InnerSource Wellness Center is an urban farm along with its beautiful Permaculture Land is nestled among the Pike Creek Valley standing atop one of the highest points in the valley and possessing the comfort of a natural energy flow, which benefits all aspects of health, wellness, and healing. Volunteers can take part in various activities around the farm and inside the facility. Volunteer hours are on Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Internships (in-person and virtual) are also available.

The Ronald Mc Donald House Charities of Greater Delaware is part of a global charity, a place where parents of sick children could be with others who understood each other’s situations and could provide emotional support; providing a place for patients and their families could dtay close to a hospital. Volunteer tasks may include: Welcoming guests and answering phones at the front desk, Giving House tours to families and visitors; Cleaning, restocking, and organizing common spaces, kitchens, and pantries; Preparing guest rooms for the arrival of new families; Simple household tasks, such as laundry or taking the trash out; Volunteer drivers (age 21+) can help our families with errands to grocery stores, pharmacies, or trips to the hospital.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination; this program helps with college prep, college tours, and academic development. Those that volunteer for the Skyline AVID program will help tutor students. Volunteering for Avid takes place at Skyline Middle School. Sojourner’s Place provides shelter and an array of individualized services for homeless men and women that empowers our residents to return to the community as independent citizens. Residents, who sign a contract to address the multiple issues that caused their homelessness, are supported, and guided by a case manager, other professional staff—and their peers. Our services are offered without cost to our residents and are applied with compassion and respect for their dignity. Volunteers help in various positions such as front desk, clerical, organizing food and clothing banks, special event planning, and many others. Hours to volunteer: 9am-6pm

The Sunday Breakfast Mission provides care and support to many homeless, hurting, and hungry men, women, and children in the surrounding Wilmington, DE area. Volunteers can take part in a wide variety of activities including Administration / Clerical, Media / Graphic Arts, Facilities (Cleaning, Light Maintenance, Landscaping), Service (Kitchen/Meal Prep, Thrift Store, Food Warehouse), Ministry (Chapel Services, Bible Study), and Special Events (Great Thanksgiving Food Outreach and Banquet, Christmas Toy Shop, Back To School Rally).
