Counseling

The MHWC offers all Goldey-Beacom College students professional mental health counseling free of charge.

Clinical Services

Short term clinical services are offered to students as needed. These services include, but are not limited to, initial appointments to determine the level of support needed, short-term therapy/consultations, and long-term community referrals. Services can be accessed by emailing [email protected] to schedule an initial appointment.

Drop-In Hours

Drop-In Hours are available throughout the academic year to afford students the ability to receive informal support from the MHWC without an appointment. These hours are sent out in student newsletters and posted on the MHWC social media.

Summer Resources

Our center is closed for the months of June and July. While we take this brief summer hiatus, student mental health remains our top priority. We’ve partnered with the Crisis Text Line. If you need to talk, just text ‘BOLT’ to 741-741 for free, immediate, and confidential assistance. We’ve also compiled a list of resources available over the summer to help you stay connected and supported.

Tips for College Students

Transitioning to college can be both exciting and challenging. Maintaining mental well-being during this period is crucial. Here are six tips for students to consider:

  1. Establish a Support System:
    • Build a network of friends, classmates, and support services on campus. Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can provide a sense of belonging and understanding.
  2. Prioritize Self-Care:
    • Make self-care a priority by getting enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and incorporating regular physical activity into your routine. Taking care of your physical health positively impacts your mental well-being.
  3. Time Management and Organization:
    • Develop effective time management skills to handle academic responsibilities and personal activities. Organize your schedule, set realistic goals, and create a routine that allows for both productivity and relaxation.
  4. Seek Professional Help When Needed:
    • If you find yourself struggling with stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns, don’t hesitate to seek help from the counseling or mental health services available on campus. Professional support can provide valuable guidance and coping strategies.
  5. Embrace Flexibility and Resilience:
    • College life comes with unexpected challenges. Embrace flexibility and cultivate resilience to adapt to changes. Learn to navigate setbacks, view them as opportunities for growth, and develop problem-solving skills.
  6. Engage in Hobbies and Recreation:
    • Set aside time for activities you enjoy. Whether it’s a hobby, sport, or creative pursuit, engaging in activities that bring you joy can serve as a positive outlet for stress and help maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Remember that the college transition is a significant life change, and it’s normal to experience a range of emotions. Being proactive about mental well-being and incorporating these tips into your daily life can contribute to a more positive and fulfilling college experience.
