A History That Shaped Us

Our story began in 1886 when H.S. Goldey opened Wilmington Commercial College in downtown Wilmington, Delaware. It was a small but ambitious school, teaching business skills like bookkeeping, typewriting, and stenography to prepare students for success in a growing economy.

But competition soon emerged. William H. Beacom, one of Goldey’s standout students-turned-instructors, had a different vision for business education. A disagreement over shorthand methods led Beacom to break away and start his own school just a few blocks away. For decades, the two institutions competed fiercely, each striving to be the premier business college in Wilmington.

After World War II, with a surge in college enrollments, the longtime rivals decided to unite. In 1951, the schools merged, creating Goldey-Beacom College. From there, we flourished, eventually moving to our current location in Pike Creek in 1974, where we’ve been growing ever since. The rest is history!
